This "Community" Thing

I started at a Lutheran seminary this past winter, and one of the things that I've encountered that is completely alien to me (I am not a Christian) is this whole community thing.

I really don't know exactly what question to ask about it. It just seems pretty foreign to me and I am not sure how it actually works. I still feel pretty marginal at the seminary. Since I am not Christian, there are some things there that I won't be involved in.

I've always been a bit of a loner, with no more than one or two friends in my life. So I don't know what to make with everyone knowing each other and doing everything together.

On the one hand I would love love love to be part of a community, but on the other hand I am a bit of a loner and it does not really occur to me to be doing things in a group with people simply because we are labeled "part of the same community".

What does this phrase mean, anyway? I understand its importance theologically, but what does it all entail? Surely one can't be expected to like everyone. I've already met a couple people that I dislike (though not many).

I just don't know how a church community works and what it is all about, I guess.
